SafeShot Vaccinator for Cattle SAFESHOT-VACCINATOR Zoetis

Description

The SafeShot Vaccinator from Zoetis enables users to administer single-handed subcutaneous injections reliably, accurately and safely in either 2mL, 2.5mL or 5mL doses in cattle.  The patented two-stage mechanism is specifically designed for accurate penetration and consistent dose placement, either deep subcutaneous or intramuscular.

The adjustable SafeShot Vaccinator can be set to a selectable rate of 2mL, 2.5mL or 5mL.

The SafeShot Vaccinator includes a two-stage activation mechanism and a patented self-tenting needle guard.  The protective needle guard minimises the risk of needle stick related injuries. The needle guard allows the operator to delay the needle penetrating until any animal movement has ceased.

Why choose the SafeShot Vaccinator;

  • Single-handed subcutaneous vaccination of animals.
  • Fully covered needle to minimise needle stick injury.
  • Consistent needle depth control.
  • Improved vaccine placement accuracy.
  • Reduces needle bend/breakage (Safeshot moves with the animal)
  • Achieves a safer distance from the animal.
  • Self-tenting Needle Guard ensures a greater level of user protection and is highly effective on a wide range of animal skin types.
  • Needle change is faster and safer.
  • Needle damage is significantly reduced, increasing the life of the needle.
  • Safer operation in confined spaces such as chutes and cattle crushes.
  • The dose is correctly administered in the subcutaneous zone.
  • Less invasive to the animal.

Why is the SafeShot Vaccinator recommended for subcutaneous injection;

  • Spiked needle guard grips and tents the animal’s skin.
  • Injector remains stable on moving animals.
  • The dose is correctly positioned.

The SafeShot Vaccinator from Zoetis allows one-handed subcutaneous injection.  Administering a one-handed subcutaneous injection is far easier and less hazardous for the operator than two-handed techniques, particularly in confined spaces such as a cattle chute. SafeShot was developed to ensure accurate single-handed subcutaneous drug placement. This allows the user to maintain a safer distance from the animal.

No more needle stick injuries. It does take a little practice to get used to it. So much quicker and safer and the animals don’t react to the needle as much.

Directions Of Use

To Set The Dose:

  • Compress the injector handles before turning the dose adjuster.
  • Keep handles compressed while setting the dose.
  • Turn the dose adjuster clockwise or anti-clockwise until the required dose appears in the dose window.
  • Once set to the required dose, let the injector handles open as normal.

Priming the Injector:

  • Remove protective tab from the closure of product container and pierce rubber stopper with a sterilised needle.
  • Attach the draw-off cap to the product container and the other end to the injector hose barb.
  • Hold the injector above the level of the product container.  This will reduce the incidence of air bubbles in the tube.
  • Squeeze and release the injector handles repeatedly.  This will draw the product through the delivery tube.  Once the product enters the barrel, carefully squeeze the handles to expel the remaining air.  Tilt the injector upwards to assist with the removal of air from the barrel.
  • When priming, hold the injector above the level of the product container.  This will reduce the incidence of air bubbles in the tube.

Needle Attachment (Option #1):

  • If the needle is sheathed, and the sheath fits through the aperture, this will allow needle attachment without having to remove the needle guard.

Needle Attachment (Option #2):

  • If the needle does not have a sheath, attach the needle by placing it into the orange needle attachment tool, inserting through the aperture of the needle guard and tighten clockwise.

Removal of the Needle Guard:

  • To remove the needle guard, grasp the injector and press the needle guard release tab with your thumb.  Grasp the needle guard with the other hand and pull to detach from the injector.

To Replace the Needle Guard:

  • Align the needle guard with the metal slide and push the needle guard onto the metal slide so that the release tab of the needle guard clips into place.  When aligning the needle guard to the metal slide, tilt the needle guard so that the release tab is angled slightly upwards.

Needle Removal:

  • Using either the needle sheath or the needle removal tool, insert through the needle guard aperture and disengage the needle by turning anti-clockwise.  If the needle is not sheathed, carefully remove the needle guard (option #2)

To Use the SafeShot Injector;

  • Maintain the injector at a 20-45 degree angle to the skin and push the injector forward against the animal to form a tent of skin.
  • Keep your body and free hand well clear of the injector to avoid self-injection.
  • Do not tent the animal’s skin using your free hand.

Tips For Use

  • Agitate vaccine regularly during use as some vaccines may settle.
  • For best practice, a 16G x ½ Needle is recommended.
  • Change the needle regularly at approximately every 50-100 doses.
  • Injection at a 45-degree angle to the skin is recommended.
  • When attacking the needle aligning the bevelled edge will be parallel with the skin.

Cleaning:

  • Immediately after each session, the injector must be cleaned and lubricated for safe and proper use in the future.  Disposable gloves must be used while cleaning the injector.
  • Remove the needle from the injector prior to cleaning.
  • Clean the exterior of the injector and needle guard in detergent and water.  Rinse with clean water.
  • Hold underwater so the inlet spigot is immersed.  Squeeze and release the handles repeatedly to pump water thoroughly through the injector.
  • Leave the tepid water in the delivery system for approximately 5 minutes to help dissolve any remaining product before continuing to vigorously pump the handles to ensure thorough flushing.
  • Remove from water and continue to pump the handles to empty the system.

Lubricating:

  • Remove the needle guard and then barrel by turning the barrel anti-clockwise.
  • Apply food-grade vegetable oil to the circumference of the O-ring and felt washer (if fitted).
  • Refit the Barrel.

Storage.

  • Never store with the needle attached.
  • The injector must be cleaned and lubricated prior to storage.
  • Store in a clean, dry place out of reach of children.
  • Protect from direct sunlight.
  • If disinfection is required, use a chlorhexidine based cold water disinfectant.  Ethanol or isopropyl alcohol can also be used.  Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and safety guidelines.
  • Do not exceed recommended disinfectant concentration.
  • Do not soak the injector for more than one hour.
  • After disinfection flushes thoroughly with sterile water to remove disinfectant residue.
  • Allow the injector to dry then re-lubricate the plunger o-ring.
